Bruh… are you afraid to take your shirt off at the beach or pool?
You’re not alone.
Most guys over the age of 40 don’t love it either. Many avoid the beach/pool at all costs rather than suffer that feeling of self-consciousness.
That bums me out. You’re missing out on some great family time.
Worse, feeling self-conscious about our physical appearance, or about anything really, sucks. It’s a sorta self-inflicted anxiety that robs us of what should be a fun, happy, and relaxing experience.
Listen, I get it. I’m not a big fan of it either.
My hangup is a quasi-body-dysmorphia. Because I’m a trainer and coach, I feel that people expect my physique to be near perfection.
At 18% body fat, it’s not even close. So, I’m with you, brother. I’m in no rush to peel my jersey off the second my feet touch the sand.
But I dislike feeling self-conscious way more than I dislike training hard and eating right, so I keep working at it. On both the physical and mental fronts.
Physically, I try to keep my percent body fat well below 20%. Mentally, I work hard to compartmentalize whatever insecurity or discomfort I feel about appearances. As real as those are, they’re unworthy of me. And you.
Optimal healthspan and top functional form are my true goals. But, looking lean and mean and not worrying about being shirtless at the beach is a sweet side benefit.
So, my dude, beach season is mere weeks away. If this is something you too are struggling with, I can help.
Shoot me a message. We’ll catch up.
