How to add more life into your work-life “balance”.

Want more work-life balance? Yeah, I don’t blame you, but I don’t believe there is such a thing.

What you actually want is to spend less time working so you can devote more time to the things you feel are essential and restorative - usually family, health, and contribution.

Here’s an area of your work life to examine - your marginal hour. Typically, it’s at the end of your workday, maybe 5:30-6:30 pm for many.

How productive, engaged, and impactful is that hour? I’ll assert that for many, it’s none of those things. It’s garbage work that you plod through, staying at your desk or on your computer in the misguided notion that it’s a demonstration of your work ethic, or that people will judge you adversely for shutting things down early.

What if you imposed an intrinsic deadline on yourself? Work with focus and intent to get ALL of your work done by 5:30 (or whatever time makes sense for you) and get the heck out of dodge to turn your attention and energy to the life half of the work-life myth.

It’s a choice. Your busyness is a choice. It’s a free country. You’re the boss of you.

Choose wisely.
